Review of the Layam App: "Layam - Carnatic Metronome"

The Layam App presents a noteworthy advancement in the realm of music education, particularly for students of Carnatic music. This application enables users to practice with authentic Mridangam tones anytime and anywhere, effectively enhancing rhythmic skills when utilized properly.

Within the app, users can select their desired shruthi, nadai, and thalam at various BPMs, with the Mridangam sound consistently flowing in the background. This flexibility allows students to practice songs across different shruthis and tempos while keeping in rhythm with established thalams. The selection process is designed to cater to a range of compositions including varnam, krithis, thillanas, and devotional songs, all carefully curated based on extensive research and feedback from seasoned artists.

The Layam App includes commonly used thalams such as Aadi Thalam, Mishrachapu Thalam, Khanda Chapu Thalam, and Rupaka Thalam, along with variations for Tishra Nadai. Both Madhyama Kaala and Vilamba Kaala nadai options are available for each thalam, ensuring that students can tailor their practice sessions according to individual requirements. Notably, the app offers two nadais for each thalam across speeds from 70 BPM to 120 BPM, while Tishra Nadai features tempos of 80 and 90 BPM—reflective of common usage in that specific thalam.

One critical aspect of the app is its approach to Mohra and Korvai sections. By incorporating Mridangam Mohra and Korvai examples in four prevalent thalams, the app assists students in comprehending essential aspects of performance such as recognizing when to resume singing or playing after a thani avarthanam. Each korvai is marked by a concluding silence that indicates a transition back to the song.

The app also eliminates the need for an external shruthi box by providing high-quality shruthi sounds integrated into the platform. Users can easily adjust the Mridangam volume to focus on the tambura sound during practice sessions.

It is important to note that while the app serves as a valuable tool for rhythm practice, it cannot replicate the unparalleled beauty of live Mridangam performance guided by manodharma. As such, it should be approached as a supplementary resource rather than a replacement for traditional learning methods.
